Qurat Ul Ain

University Student in Food Systems Innovation

Pakistan

I am Qurat Ul Ain, deeply passionate about vermicomposting and its potential in sustainable agriculture. My master’s thesis focused on vermicomposting in Pakistan, particularly its impact on plant growth and yield productivity for small-scale farmers in Punjab. My inspiration stemmed from an internship under Professor Eric de Bruin, who introduced me to Rhonda Sherman’s “The Worm Farmer’s Handbook.” This ignited my passion, and I aspire to be Pakistan’s first female worm farmer, aka “A Worman”.

With this scholarship, I plan to learn and integrate vermicomposting techniques into my research, collaborate with peers, and initiate community projects promoting eco-friendly farming practices, both in Pakistan and beyond.
More about “Anie”:
I did my master thesis in vermicomposting and the topic was “Vermicomposting in Pakistan : Effects of it on growth and productivity of yields for future adaptation by Punjab’s small scale farmers” by keeping in mind that: Pakistani farmers are still unfamiliar with these methods and this change requires time, motivation and money. I tried to show with a small experiment what the effect is on plants growing on vermicompost, and what it can mean for the Pakistani agricultural sector. By informing farmers about the benefits of vermicompost and showing them how easy it is to apply, they can greatly improve the green sector and the environment.
I got really interested in vermicomposting after my internship professor Eric de Nam offered me a book by Rhonda Sherman “the worm farmer’s handbook”. I want to learn from all the knowledgeable speakers at the symposium and apply the knowledge I get from there to my home country as I want prove what my teachers call me; that is Pakistan’s first women worm farmer, “A Worman”.
I am deeply passionate about worm related topics especially vermicomposting, and their potential in sustainable agriculture. This scholarship will further enable me to further my knowledge and contribute to this field, aligning with my academic and professional goals.
I plan to apply the knowledge gained at the Symposium to actively contribute to sustainable agricultural practices back home and wherever the knowledge is required. This includes integrating vermicomposting techniques into my research, sharing insights with peers, and fostering community initiatives that promote eco-friendly farming methods.
